The Role of FinTech in Expanding Access to Finance for Underserved Communities: A Policy-Focused Study Linking Digital Financial Services to Economic Inclusion
Abstract
Financial technology (FinTech) has become a disruptive element in the solution of financial exclusion of underserved populations across the world. This paper discusses how FinTech innovations can be used to increase the reach of financial services to disadvantaged groups such as low-income families, rural areas, women, and small businesses. By examining the concept of digital financial services, including mobile money, digital lending platforms, and blockchain-based solutions, in a thorough and focused manner, this study examines the role of FinTech in filling the gap between the traditional banking infrastructure and the financially excluded groups. Using a mixed-methods design, which implies the use of quantitative data on 847 respondents in five developing economies and a qualitative analysis of the policies, the results show that the acceptance of FinTech is strongly associated with better financial inclusion rates, such as account ownership, access to credit, and saving behavior. The paper names the main enablers and obstacles to financial inclusion facilitated by FinTech, which are the regulatory environment, digital literacy, access to infrastructure, and trust. Findings indicate that mobile money-based services can expand the financial accessibility of target communities by 34-58 percent, and digital credit can decrease the time of loans processing by 87 percent relative to traditional means. Nevertheless, the digital divide, the issue of cybersecurity, and the fragmentation of regulations remain. The study has a research impact in the policy discourse by offering a holistic model of FinTech-enabled financial inclusion that would provide balance between innovation and consumer protection. Policymaking, financial institutions, and FinTech entrepreneurs are discussed in terms of practical implications and the recommendations on the direction of further research in the rapidly changing field.
